Good Fortune
A pig stands on flat cream ground; a macaque sits on the pig; an owl stands on the macaque. Three animals, three cultures' worth of luck symbolism, stacked without a word of explanation. Juvonen paints the pig in warm shell pink with real bulk to it, the monkey in greys, the owl small and pale at the top. Nothing supports the stack and nothing suggests it is unstable. The seriousness of the painting is what makes the arrangement funny.
