A gorilla, three-quarter view, holds one hand out and a small bluebird has landed on the finger. The ape is worked in deep charcoal and umber with the light catching along the brow ridge and shoulder, and the bird is a few strokes of cobalt — the only cool colour in the painting. The gorilla looks at it. Juvonen gives the animal no anthropomorphic expression and does not need to; the whole feeling of the picture is carried by where the attention is pointed.
