Sunset Over The City
White cumulus rises over a dark ridge, and along the base of that ridge runs a broken line of city light. The cloud is the brightest thing in the picture and the city is barely there — a few warm flecks — which inverts the usual arrangement of a skyline painting. Juvonen paints the ridge as one flat dark mass with no articulation at all. The weather is the subject; the city is a measurement.
