A tulip field in full colour: a band of cadmium red running the width of the canvas, a green strip behind it, snow peaks and a pale sky above, with small bent figures working the rows. Four feet across. Currier separates his planes with a thick red outline that reads as both boundary and assertion — it verges on graphic design and is what keeps the picture from dissolving into pure colour field. The workers are three or four strokes each and they are the reason the red has a scale.
