Recovering Wetland

Jane Wallis

Twenty by twenty-four, her largest work here. Bleached grass and standing water run back to a dark treeline, with drowned scrub breaking the surface in the middle distance. The palette is almost entirely ochre and bone. It is a landscape in the middle of a process — the title says recovering, and the picture declines to show either what it was or what it will be.
