Madrona
Deep umber and charcoal fill the upper two thirds and drop to hot orange along the bottom edge, twelve inches square. The darkest of her small works, and the one where the warm band has to fight hardest to be seen. Madrona is both a Seattle neighbourhood and the red-barked tree that grows all over this coast, shedding its outer skin every summer — and the palette here belongs to the tree rather than to the streets.
