African Queen

Barbara Duzan

A standing antelope worked in scarlet beadwork with a broad collar of white and gold beads at the throat and a beaded mask across the face — regalia rather than hide. The colour is at full strength everywhere, and the surface changes completely between the smooth red body and the encrusted collar. Where Prairie Queen and Big Bear use beadwork on a trophy head, this is a whole animal standing on its own four legs, dressed. The difference in posture changes the argument entirely.
