Acre

Brian Fisher

A field of dense black marks on a red-brown ground, each one a short closed loop or hooked stroke, packed edge to edge with no space left over. Nothing is a letter and the whole surface behaves like writing — the marks run in rough horizontal courses, they vary in size the way handwriting does, and the eye scans them left to right without being asked. Fisher names it for a crusader city and gives it the look of a wall that has been written on for centuries.
