Soft blue-grey throughout, deepening into a band of fuller blue low down, twelve inches square. Seen from the water rather than from a shore: there is no land, no structure and nothing at all to give scale, which is exactly the condition of being out on the Sound in flat light. Wolf's titles almost always name a real place; this one names a position instead, and the painting is correspondingly unmoored.
