Color Along The Creek
A band of cadmium and lemon foliage runs across the upper middle, deep blue hills sit above it, and below the creek is laid in long horizontal knife strokes of blue, cream and shell pink. Three registers, three temperatures, stacked. Smith keeps the water almost entirely unworked — the widest passage of flat paint in her work here — so that the yellow above it has somewhere to sound against. The restraint is the whole composition.
