Was There

Tim McMeans

A great blue heron drawn in exact detail — bill, crest, the grey shoulder feathers — set inside a circular tondo of smoke-stained paper with a black rim. Twenty inches square. The round format is unusual for him and suits the bird's folded neck. The title is past tense, and the heron is the only thing in the picture that was.
