Bright Spark: Teal
Teal veins run through a white field above a solid teal band, the wax broken open by heat into a network of cells. The shapes arise within the field rather than being drawn into it — what Abaté describes as the spontaneous dance and movement of liquid wax and heat. The band along the foot is a horizon: she was raised under the open skies of the Columbia Basin wheat country and responds to the dynamic of a horizon line separating yet pairing two fields of colour. Twelve inches square, encaustic: as many as thirty layers of beeswax, damar resin and pigment on birch, fused with a propane torch and smoothed with an iron.
