Grand Fir Trunks
Grand fir trunks fill a twelve-inch square, painted in vertical bands of grey, olive and rust with light breaking between them. There is no sky, no ground and no horizon — the picture begins and ends inside the wood. It is the most abstract sheet Walsh has here, a forest reduced to the rhythm of its own verticals, and it works because grand firs really do grow branchless for the first forty feet, so a wood of them is exactly this: a set of parallel lines.
