Interlude
Still water under bare autumn trees, the surface holding rust and violet reflections, nine by twelve inches. Nothing happens in it. No bird, no movement, no weather — and for a painter whose subject is usually a specific creature doing a specific thing, that absence is the point. An interlude is the pause between two things, and the picture is composed to hold it rather than to fill it.
