Dark cloud masses hang over a bay with a low island on the horizon, and beneath them the water carries a broad wash of gold and cream where the light gets through. The date in the title is not explained and the painting does not illustrate anything. McShane simply records a particular sky on a particular day, and the weight of the clouds against that narrow band of warmth does the rest.
