Light Through Chopaka

Lisa McShane

Dark ridges fall to a valley floor where a river holds the last of the light, the mountains behind graded from near-black to pale violet as they recede. The light comes through a gap rather than from above. McShane's largest work here at four feet across, and the one where the tonal control is most obvious — there must be a dozen distinct values between the nearest ridge and the farthest.
