Reflections on The Point
Blue sky, a run of white cumulus along the horizon, and beneath it water broken into long horizontal ripples that carry the clouds back in pieces. This is the brightest and most straightforwardly cheerful painting McShane has here. The ripple pattern is worked with real patience — each band a slightly different value — and it is the only picture where she lets the surface, rather than the distance, hold the eye.
