River of No Return
Canyon walls fall steeply on both sides, deep in shadow, and between them the river runs pale silver with gold catching the ridge line high on the left. The Salmon River earns its name from being navigable downstream and not back up, and McShane paints exactly that: everything in the picture leads away from the viewer and nothing offers a way back.
