Mixed Media on Paper
Animal encounters as primary subject

The Artist Susan Le Van

Encounters with animals have been the focus of Susan Le Van's work for many years. The animals in her paintings are specific individuals — animals she has spent time with — and the work is an attempt to hold the moment when a person and an animal glimpse one another across the line that usually separates them. "Human beings and animals seem to exist in parallel universes," she has written, "but now and again we glimpse one another and our otherwise separate existences overlap."

Le Van works in paint, ink, and collage on paper. Her practice is built around mark making, surface, color, and series, and she has a sustained interest in the qualities of paper itself — both the ephemeral and the gritty. The work is rendered as series, layered, with attention to the moment of recognition. ArtNews (June 2020) described paper as "a disobedient medium with primordial powers" — a description she has cited as fitting her own approach.
