A Watched Pot
A kitchen interior with a black range at its centre, a red-and-white tiled floor running to the front edge, and warm light gathering on the ceiling. Ingalls paints from dark to light — the room was laid in shadow first and the illumination added on top — and the method shows in how the highlights sit proud of the ground. Her palette is famously restricted: one yellow, two reds, two blues, a black and a white. Everything in this room is made from those.
