At Night (Diptych)
Two book-matched walnut burl panels hang side by side, their grain mirroring across the seam, and across them a tree and its root mass are worked in silver leaf and fine cross-hatching, with a white moon at the upper left. Mann chose the burl for its own figure and then drew a tree onto it — wood carrying a portrait of wood. The roots take up more of the picture than the trunk, which is the correct proportion and almost never the one chosen. Her largest and most valuable work here.
