A Path In
A path runs in between two stands of fir and stops being a path about a third of the way up, where the light takes over. Smith lays the boughs as thick curved strokes of prussian and teal, each one a single loaded pass that keeps its edge — no blending, no attempt at needle or twig. The trunks are burnt sienna verticals dropped straight through. Everything dark is arranged around a pale cream aperture at the centre, and the painting works because that opening is left almost bare while the framing is worked heavily. It is a composition about wanting to get to the other end.
