Cathedral 18

Teresa Smith

The hottest painting Smith has here. Trunks in rust and crimson — not her usual burnt sienna but a red pushed almost to cadmium — stand against a ground of deep blue-violet, with a burst of cream-white light breaking through at the centre. The complementary contrast is extreme and she does nothing to soften it. Teal boughs cross the top. The red trunks are laid in long unbroken strokes that read as drawn rather than painted, so the picture has a linear armature holding all that colour in place. Cathedral is not an overstatement here.
