Blue Moon Rising
Five feet across and the most fully cubist thing Juvonen has here. Figures are broken into angular planes of violet, teal, cadmium and black, interlocking so tightly that limbs and grounds share edges. There is no atmospheric space at all — everything sits on the picture plane. Against his deadpan animal paintings this is the far end of the same instinct: take a familiar subject and refuse the expected way of showing it.
