Bare pale trunks stand close together across the full width, and behind them the last gold foliage of the season is laid in flat rectangular blocks against a cool sky. Beneath, snow — worked in cream, shell pink and blue-violet, with a road curving through it. The painting is built on a single opposition: warm above, cold below, meeting at a line of dark green about a third of the way up. The title says what the picture is about and the picture does not need the title.
