For The Love Of Trees

Teresa Smith

A row of firs stands across the full width, evenly spaced, their boughs laid as short horizontal strokes of prussian and viridian that repeat down each trunk like rungs. Behind them a pale lemon and cream sky; beneath, a dense band of blue-violet undergrowth worked with the knife. The regularity is deliberate and risky — the repetition brings the painting close to pattern, and Smith holds it back from that only by varying the lean of each trunk and letting the sienna show through at different heights. A colonnade rather than a wood.
