Fort Ward
A small landscape — a bay, a green shore, summer cloud — with white slats laid vertically across the left third so the view is partly barred. Painted in oil on cradled panel, the only conventionally painted picture Mann has here. Fort Ward is a decommissioned coastal battery on Bainbridge Island, and the slats read as the bunker openings through which that water was watched for a war that never arrived there.
