Six feet tall and under three feet wide, which is the whole composition: a standing nude in a narrow alcove, lit warm gold from one side, with deep shadow either hand. The extreme upright format leaves no room for setting and no room to step back. Juvonen paints the light rather than the figure — the amber falling down one flank is the most carefully built passage in the picture. His largest work here and his quietest.
