Life At The Pond

Teresa Smith

The most abstract painting in Smith's Sanctuary group and the one that gives up the most description. A pale lavender and blue mass turns at the centre — water, or the sky in water — ringed by dark twisting forms in oxblood, olive and rust that could be branches or could be reflection. Hot red and orange collect along the bottom edge and refuse to resolve into anything. The brushwork is faster here than in her forest interiors, the strokes shorter and more agitated. She has painted the pond as a vortex rather than a surface, and left the viewer to decide how much of it is above the water.
