Sixty inches tall and twenty-eight wide, the narrowest format Smith works in, and she uses the constraint properly — the eye is forced to climb. Oxblood and deep umber hold the left edge, gold foliage crowds the middle, dark firs rise through it, and the whole thing resolves into blue-violet at the foot. There is no horizon and no sky to speak of. A hillside seen from directly beneath it, with nowhere for the picture to escape sideways.
