North Coast

Teresa Smith

Two dark firs stand on a rocky headland against a cream and pale-blue sky, with orange and rust rock dropping to blue water below. Smith paints the rock the way she usually paints foliage — short angular blocks of flat colour, no blending — so the cliff has the same made quality as the trees. The firs are silhouetted almost to black. Small, and among the most clearly composed pictures she has here: two verticals, one diagonal, and a lot of held-back sky.
