Place For A Picnic

Teresa Smith

One large tree stands right of centre, its canopy a mass of teal and prussian strokes, over a meadow of yellow-green worked in broad knife passes. Ochre light gathers at the horizon and blue-violet shadow runs across the grass toward the viewer. This is the warmest and most open painting of Smith's Sanctuary group — no framing device, no dark corners, the eye let straight in. The title is plain and the painting earns it: there is a place to sit in this picture, which is not true of the forest interiors beside it.
