Salish Sea
The most open painting Smith has here and the one with the least incident. A broad sheet of pale blue water takes the lower half, carrying cream and shell-pink reflections in long flat strokes; a dark wooded shore runs across the middle; violet hills and a gold sky sit above. The knife work in the water is nearly unbroken — she resists every opportunity to fuss it. Where her forest interiors are about being enclosed, this is about the absence of that, and it needed the restraint to say so.
