Spirit Within
Smith moves right up against the trees here and loses the wood entirely. Two enormous pale trunks — grey, bone, faint lavender — fill the height of the canvas, close enough that the bark becomes the subject, with dark green foliage draping across and between them. There is no horizon, no light source to locate, no way to judge how far back anything sits. It is the least topographical painting she has here and the closest to abstraction, and the scale is only readable from the fact that these are obviously trees.
