Spirit’s In The Trees
A tangle of bare branching trees fills the picture edge to edge, painted in rust and sienna against sky broken into blocks of white, blue and green. There is no clear ground and no single tree to settle on. Smith works the negative spaces as hard as the branches — the gaps are as deliberately shaped as the wood — which is why the picture reads as crowded rather than sparse despite being mostly empty. Winter, and the title is doing the rest.
