I build the ground beneath a painting the way time builds a wall — worn layers of pattern and patina, soft and familiar. Here, a weathered cream panel holds a hummingbird poised among small flame-colored blooms, that quieted center a resting place for the eye; then the bold, modern note arrives: a vivid red field of chrysanthemums and branching stems pushes in from every side, dynamic and unexpected.
