Tree Spiral

Teresa Smith

The strangest painting in the group. Trunks in rust and sienna twist in genuine spirals against dark green foliage and torn white gaps of sky — not a forest interior but a knot of them, the canopy pushed to the edges and the movement of the wood made the whole subject. Smith paints the curves in long continuous strokes that visibly change direction mid-pass. It is denser and more airless than anything else she has in the show, and it is the one where her hand is most clearly visible. Whether it is claustrophobic or protective depends on the day you see it.
