The densest painting in her group and deliberately airless. Green vines and thin branches lace across the entire surface, rust trunks pushing up behind them, and what light there is arrives as pale lavender behind the tangle rather than through it. There is no path and no opening. Smith's forest pictures usually offer a way in or a way out; this one offers neither and is named for the layer of the wood where that is true.
