View Point

Teresa Smith

The most conventionally resolved landscape of the eight, and the one that shows how much structure sits under the looser work. A shoreline crosses the lower third; the water is cream and pale gold, taking the light almost flat. A headland of dark firs closes the left, two more stand in the right foreground, and lavender-grey hills lie across the back under a warm yellow sky. Smith keeps her thick calligraphic boughs in the foreground trees while the distance is thinned to washes. The picture is quiet, and it is quiet on purpose.
