Winter Colors
A wide winter picture built on a single band of rust-orange at the horizon, no thicker than a finger, which does all the work. Above it a pale sky is worked in slow spirals of cream and lavender; below, a dark shoreline carries the same rust in flecks among umber and deep green. Dark firs close both edges and a small stand of gold trees stands out at the centre distance. Take the orange away and the painting is grey weather. Smith knows this and gives it exactly the room it needs, not an inch more.
