Water Fall
Water drops in a single white column between dark cliffs under a bank of stormy cloud, with a thin band of gold light along the horizon behind. Juvonen keeps the rock almost featureless — deep umber and near-black, no articulation — so the falling water is the only worked passage in the picture. The spray at the base is dragged wet and left rough. It is his most conventional subject and he handles it the same way he handles a mandrill: one thing given full attention, everything else reduced to a ground for it.
