Fracture and Alignment

Maria Cristalli

Three tall forged columns stand close together, their surfaces worked into vertical striations that read as split basalt. Two feet high. The forms are almost identical and set at slightly different heights and angles, so they read as one mass that has parted rather than three objects gathered. Cristalli works hot steel into the appearance of cold stone, which is a deliberate contradiction — basalt fractures as it cools and this material was shaped by being heated.
