Iron Sun

Maria Cristalli

A rusted disc with forged blades radiating from it, each one hammered to a different taper so the corona is regular without being mechanical. Twenty-three inches across and hung on the wall. Cristalli came to sculpture after twenty-seven years of gates and railings, and it shows in the construction — this is built outward from a centre the way a wheel is built, every element individually drawn out at the forge and set. The oxidation is left as the finish. Iron that has been in fire, made into the thing that supplies it.
